Le plus grand génie talmudique du judaïsme lituanien, surnommé le Gaon de Vilna. Maître de toutes les disciplines (Talmud, Kabbale, mathématiques, astronomie), il s'opposa au hassidisme naissant. Ses élèves fondèrent le premier mouvement d'immigration en Terre d'Israël au XIXe siècle.
