Dramaturge anglais né le 19 février 1732 à Cambridge et mort le 7 mai 1811 à Tunbridge Wells, Richard Cumberland est formé à Bury St Edmunds et Westminster avant d'entrer à Trinity College. Vers 1750, secrétaire de Lord Halifax, il se consacre à l'écriture théâtrale et connaît le succès avec « A Summer's Tale » (1765) puis « The West Indian » (1770), monté par Garrick. En 1777, il écrit « The Jew », qui oppose au Shylock de Shakespeare et au Barabas de Marlowe la figure généreuse de Sheva, parue avant « Nathan der Weise ».
