Né à Brooklyn en 1938, fils de Harry et Belle (Simon) Lelchuk, il est un romancier américain conscient de sa place dans la tradition littéraire judéo-américaine. Cofondateur de Steerforth Press, il a enseigné à Brandeis, Amherst et, depuis 1985, à Dartmouth College. Ses premiers romans dépeignent la vie intellectuelle juive-américaine.
