NESVIZH (Nieswiez; Rus. Nesvizh): Town in the Minsk government, White Russia. It is first mentioned in 1552. The Jewish community there existed from early times. In 1648 the Jewish quarter was almost completely destroyed during the Cossack massacres. The community was afterwards rebuilt, and in the middle of the eighteenth century Nesvizh was one of the most important Jewish centers in White Russia. It was the seat of a *yeshivah of considerable repute. The community was almost entirely wiped out during the persecutions of 1881-82. Petite ville du gouvernement de Minsk, Russie ; elle existait depuis le treizième siècle. Le recensement de 1897 lui attribue une population de 8 446 habitants, dont 4 764 Juifs. Le maraîchage est une occupation commune parmi ces derniers. Il y a 650 artisans juifs et 110 journaliers. Elle possède un Talmud Torah (120 élèves), et des écoles du jour juives pour garçons (43 élèves) et filles (58 élèves). Les institutions charitables comprennent une dispensaire, un gemillat ḥesed, un linat ha-ẓedeḳ, etc. Il y a huit synagogues. La ville a souffert gravement d'un incendie en 1897.
