Professeur de Bible à l'Université hébraïque de Jérusalem, spécialiste du Deutéronome, de la justice sociale dans l'Israël ancien et des manuscrits de la mer Morte. Lauréat du prix d'Israël pour l'étude de la Bible en 1994. Il a publié plus d'une douzaine de livres et quelque 240 articles.
