אזור: Höchberg (Bavière, naissance), Francfort-sur-le-Main
Né en 1831 à Höchberg (Bavière) dans une famille juive de commerçants en drap qu'il transforme en maison de banque. Il fonde et dirige à Francfort la Frankfurter Zeitung (constituée sous ce titre en 1866), l'un des grands quotidiens libéraux allemands. Il siège au Reichstag (1871-1876 et 1878-1884) pour le Deutsche Volkspartei et au conseil municipal de Francfort. Le journal resta un organe libéral jusqu'à sa fermeture ordonnée par Hitler en 1943.
