Né à Paris dans une famille juive d'origine alsacienne à forte culture scientifique (son grand-oncle était le mathématicien Jacques Hadamard, son beau-père Paul Lévy, son oncle le pédiatre Robert Debré). Premier Français médaillé Fields (1950) pour sa théorie des distributions, qui révolutionna l'analyse. Professeur à l'École polytechnique, il fut aussi un militant anticolonialiste.
