Mathématicien et statisticien américain né le 1er juillet 1923, fils de Pauline et Max Chernoff, immigrants juifs de l'Empire russe. Doctorat en 1948 sous Abraham Wald. Professeur à l'Illinois, Stanford, MIT et Harvard. Il a donné son nom à la « borne de Chernoff » et aux « visages de Chernoff » (représentation graphique de données multidimensionnelles). Membre de la National Academy of Sciences (1980).
