Né à Brooklyn de Julius et Shirley Zweibel, famille juive. Scénariste original du Saturday Night Live (1975-1980), lauréat de cinq Emmy Awards. Auteur d'une dizaine de livres, dont le roman « The Other Shulman » (prix Thurber 2006 de l'humour américain) et le mémoire « Laugh Lines » (2020). A collaboré avec Billy Crystal (700 Sundays) et Dave Barry (Lunatics).
