In his commentary on the Mishnah, Maimonides formulated thirteen fundamental principles of Jewish faith, concerning notably the existence and unity of God, prophecy, the Torah, reward and punishment, the coming of the Messiah, and the resurrection of the dead. Summarized in the Yigdal hymn and the Ani Ma'amin prayer, these principles became a major, though debated, reference point of Jewish dogma.
