Inspirés du quadrivium et des classifications gréco-arabes, des savants juifs médiévaux organisèrent le savoir profane en « sept sciences » : grammaire, logique, arithmétique, géométrie, musique, astronomie et physique-métaphysique. Des encyclopédies hébraïques comme le Midrash ha-Hokhma de Yehouda ben Salomon ha-Cohen ou le Deot ha-Filosofim de Shemtov Falaquera témoignent de cet idéal.
