Kiddush is the prayer of sanctification for Shabbat and festivals, recited over a cup of wine before the meal. It proclaims the holiness of the day and recalls the creation of the world or the Exodus, depending on the occasion. Performed on Friday evening and during the day, the ceremony frames the festive meals and is a major domestic rite of sanctifying time.
