The Great Synagogue on Krystalgade, in the heart of Copenhagen, is the main place of worship of the Danish Jewish community — the very community that the Danish population had ferried to Sweden during the German occupation. On February 15, 2015, in the night, a gunman opened fire outside the building where a bat-mitsva celebration was taking place and killed Dan Uzan, a community member who was voluntarily guarding the entrance; two police officers were wounded. The same attacker had struck a few hours earlier at a debate on freedom of expression at the Krudttønden cultural center, killing a Danish filmmaker. He was shot dead in the early morning. The permanent protection of Jewish sites in Denmark dates from that night.
