In April 2002, a suicide bomber detonated himself at a bus stop at the entrance to the Mahane Yehuda market in Jerusalem, where shoppers were crowding. The market, the popular heart of the city, had already been struck several times and would be struck again; its covered alleyways and stalls draw a crowd every day that no means can filter.

The attack was part of the wave that followed the entry of the Israeli army into the West Bank. It is from this period that the barriers and checkpoints installed at the market entrances date, as well as the habit acquired by Jerusalemites of watching who boards the bus alongside them.
