Attack — Dimona, women workers' bus

7 mars 1988·Dimona, autobus des ouvrières

Toll

The toll is reproduced exactly as the source states it — never rounded, never added to another. Tolls overlap from one event to the next.

Dimona, in the Negev, lives largely off the nuclear research center installed nearby. Each morning, buses carry the city's workers there.

A commando unit crossed the Egyptian border through the desert and intercepted one of these buses, which was transporting female workers. The attackers took the passengers hostage and barricaded themselves in; the assault by Israeli forces put an end to the hostage-taking, but women were killed.

The attack, known in Israel as that of the "mothers' bus," occurred during the first Intifada and struck a civilian population in a development town in the south of the country, far from the front lines.
