Nahariya is a coastal city in northern Israel, close to the Lebanese border. A commando unit lands there by night from the sea and enters a residential building on the seafront.
The attackers break into a family's apartment, take the father and one of his daughters to the beach and kill them. The mother, hiding with the other child in a small recess, inadvertently smothers the little girl while trying to prevent her from crying out. A police officer is also killed in the exchange of fire.
One of the perpetrators, captured alive, would be released years later in a prisoner exchange, making this attack one of the most debated in Israel and one of the symbols of the discussion surrounding such exchanges.
