Jewish families murdered, the community is evacuated from the country
After the exodus that had followed the postwar pogroms, only a small nucleus of families remained in Libya, concentrated in Tripoli and Benghazi. The announcement of the Six-Day War immediately unleashed violence against them.
In Benghazi, Jewish families were murdered in their homes and houses set on fire; survivors were gathered by the authorities into a military camp, officially for their protection. They were subsequently evacuated from the country by plane, permitted to take only a suitcase and a negligible sum of money.
These days brought to an end a Jewish presence of more than two millennia in Cyrenaica, attested from the Hellenistic period by inscriptions from the region.
