Shops and synagogues attacked several nights in a row, the most affected city

In the summer, the execution of two British sergeants by the Irgoun in Mandatory Palestine provoked considerable outrage in the United Kingdom. In the days that followed, antisemitic riots broke out in several industrial cities.

Liverpool was the most severely affected city. For several nights in a row, businesses owned by Jews were attacked, shop windows smashed, and synagogues targeted; dozens of shops were damaged and people were injured. Police made arrests and the local press expressed indignation, but the violence resumed the following evening.

This was the most serious antisemitic episode in postwar Britain, and it struck a community that had just learned the full extent of the destruction of the Jews of Europe.
