following the hanging of two British sergeants in Palestine, synagogues, shops and cemeteries attacked in Liverpool, Manchester, Glasgow and London

From 1 to 8 August 1947, Britain experienced a week of antisemitic riots, triggered by the hanging in Mandatory Palestine of two British sergeants by the Irgun. In Liverpool, Manchester, Glasgow, and London's East End, synagogues were attacked, shops looted and set ablaze, cemeteries desecrated, and passers-by assaulted.

It is the most widespread episode of anti-Jewish violence Britain witnessed in the twentieth century, and it occurred two years after the liberation of the camps, directed against a British community with no connection to events in Palestine. The popular press, which had long stoked public anger, bears a share of the responsibility; prosecutions were few.
