Jewish shops attacked in the Gorbals
In Glasgow, the Jewish community had settled primarily in the Gorbals district, where it kept shops and workshops. It was caught up in the wave of riots that swept across the United Kingdom during the summer.
Jewish businesses there were attacked and their windows smashed. The damage was less severe than in Liverpool, but the pattern was the same: residents turned on long-standing neighbors in the name of events that had taken place thousands of kilometers away.
The episode remains little known outside Scotland; yet it is one of the rare moments when organized antisemitic street violence struck the country.
