Jewish detainees are shot in ditches dug behind the crematorium, to the sound of music broadcast by loudspeakers.
The operation known as "Erntefest," the harvest festival, was decided upon following the revolts at Treblinka, Sobibór, and the enclosed quarter of Warsaw: the aim was to eliminate at a single stroke the last Jewish detainees in the labor camps of the Lublin district.
At Majdanek, the pits were dug in the preceding days behind the crematorium, in open ground. The execution took place over two days in November; loudspeakers broadcast dance music to cover the sound of the gunfire and prevent those still waiting from understanding what was happening.
