The Shoah (1939–1945)

Liquidation of the Hlybokaïe ghetto

20 août 1943·Hlybokaïe

Toll
bilan non établi

The toll is reproduced exactly as the source states it — never rounded, never added to another. Tolls overlap from one event to the next.

The ghetto, where Jews from neighboring towns had been gathered, is liquidated; some of those enclosed attempt a desperate revolt.

Hlybokaïe, in northern Belarus, had received into its closed quarter the Jews from the surrounding townlets, making it one of the last gatherings in the region still standing.

When news of its liquidation came at the end of summer, some of those imprisoned armed themselves with whatever they could find and attempted a revolt: houses were set on fire, a few broke through the fence and made their way into the forests. The action was carried through to its conclusion, and the records have not permitted any definitive count.
