Liquidation of the Zbaraż Ghetto

Zbaraż, a fortified town in eastern Galicia whose citadel commands the plain of the Zbroutch, was home to an ancient community of merchants and Hasidic Jews, established around the main square and its synagogues. Under the occupation, the community was first subjected to census, taxation, and the confiscation of its property and livelihoods, then confined to an enclosed quarter into which the Jews of the surrounding villages were also crowded. Hunger and typhus took their toll before the actions began in succession: selections on the square, convoys to the extermination camp in the Lublin region, the sick and the elderly shot in the courtyards. The quarter was emptied in several waves until its complete liquidation.
