Liquidation of Włocławek Ghetto

Włocławek, a city on the lower Vistula annexed to the Reich, was home to a Jewish community attested since the Middle Ages, which had flourished in the nineteenth century through faience and paper manufacturing. It was one of the first cities in occupied Poland where the occupier imposed a distinctive badge sewn onto clothing, even before the measure was extended across the board. Its inhabitants endured expulsions to the Gouvernement général, then confinement in an enclosed quarter. In the spring, this quarter was emptied and the population transported to the extermination center of Chełmno nad Nerem.
