Wieluń, a town in western Poland, was one of the first cities bombed on the morning war broke out, even before any declaration: its hospital and town center were destroyed. Annexed to the Reich, it saw its Jewish community — ancient and fairly numerous — confined to an enclosed quarter, subjected to forced labor and deportations to neighboring localities. In the summer, this quarter was liquidated and its inhabitants were transported to the death center of Chełmno nad Nerem. The city destroyed on the first day of the war thus lost the oldest of its communities.
