The Shoah (1939–1945)

Liquidation of the ghetto of Skalat

1942-1943·Skalat

Toll
plusieurs milliers de morts

The toll is reproduced exactly as the source states it — never rounded, never added to another. Tolls overlap from one event to the next.

The ghetto of the Galician town is emptied by repeated actions; the last inhabitants are held in a labor camp, then shot when it is closed.

Skalat, in eastern Galicia, was home to a community annihilated through a series of raids. The inhabitants were rounded up in waves, deported to the Bełżec extermination center or shot on the spot in nearby pits, until the liquidation of the ghetto. The memory of those days was recorded by survivors in the city's memorial book.
