Turobin, a small town between Lublin and Zamość, had long been home to a community of grain merchants and tailors. The occupier gathered Jews from several villages there, swelling the population of the quarter far beyond what the town could sustain. In the spring, the liquidation operation led its inhabitants to the Krasnystaw station, then to Bełżec. A second wave, in the autumn, took those the first had left behind. The houses were then looted and the synagogue turned into a warehouse. Turobin, whose Jewish life stretched back several centuries, was emptied in a matter of days.
