Pabianice, an industrial city in the Warthegau a few leagues from Łódź, was home to a Jewish community that lived from textiles, spinning mills, and hosiery. Annexed to the Reich as early as the autumn of the first year of the war, its Jewish inhabitants were confined to an enclosed quarter, subjected to forced labor in workshops taken over by the occupiers. By summer, this quarter was liquidated: some of its inhabitants were transferred to the Łódź ghetto, where hunger and labor exhausted them, while the rest were taken to the extermination center of Chełmno nad Nerem. The children and the elderly were separated first.
