Tarnobrzeg, on the Vistula north of western Galicia, is one of the very first towns in the district to be emptied of its Jews: within the opening weeks of the occupation, the Jewish population is driven across the river into the zone held by the Soviet army, in an expulsion carried out at a brutal pace. Those who return or remain are confined to a reduced quarter. The liquidation of that quarter follows the district's timetable: the inhabitants are taken to Dębica and then to Bełżec. The synagogue of Tarnobrzeg, one of the most remarkable in the region, is burned to the ground.
