Liquidation of the Szydłowiec ghetto

Szydłowiec, a small town of quarrymen and stonemasons between Radom and Kielce, had an overwhelmingly Jewish population, whose ancient cemetery bore witness to several centuries of presence. The occupier established there a closed quarter that received Jews from the surrounding area, pushing the population well beyond what the town could sustain; typhus raged within it. In the autumn, the inhabitants were led to Treblinka. A second roundup, a few months later, gathered Jews found in hiding places throughout the region before deporting them in turn.
