A town southeast of Warsaw whose Jewish population was taken in autumn to Treblinka.
Garwolin, on the road from Warsaw to Lublin, had a community that formed the majority in the town, settled around the market. From the very first weeks of the occupation, part of the Jewish quarter was burned and the population driven out. Those who returned were confined to a reduced quarter, swelled by Jews from the surrounding villages. In the autumn, the town was emptied: its inhabitants were taken to Treblinka. The sick and those in hiding were shot in the streets and at the cemetery. The community of Garwolin vanished.
