The Shoah (1939–1945)
Massacre of Rohatyn
20 mars 1942·Rohatyn
The toll is reproduced exactly as the source states it — never rounded, never added to another. Tolls overlap from one event to the next.
Gathered on the market square at dawn, the Jews of the town and neighboring villages are driven toward a trench dug on the outskirts of the locality and shot in the snow.
Rohatyn, in eastern Galicia, sees its ghetto emptied in the spring: the Jewish inhabitants are gathered in the market square, led out of the town, and shot at the edge of a pit dug near the brickworks. The survivors are brought back to the ghetto, where further roundups follow until its liquidation; the town's Jewish cemetery has since been documented stone by stone.
