City on the upper Vistula whose Jews, expelled as early as the winter of the occupation to neighboring towns, are caught up in the spring convoys.
A city on the Vistula northwest of Lublin, Puławy was among the first localities in the district to be emptied of its Jews: in the early months of the occupation, the Jewish population was expelled to the towns on the right bank, Opole Lubelskie and Końskowola in particular, and the city was declared free of Jews. The expelled found themselves there, crammed together, alongside the local communities and convoys arriving from the Reich. When the turn of these towns came, in the spring and summer, the inhabitants of Puławy met the same fate as those who had taken them in, and made their way to Bełżec and Sobibór. They were forbidden to return to the city; what remained of their quarter was demolished.
