Opoczno, a small town on the road from Radom to Łódź, had a community of tailors and grain merchants. During the occupation, the Jews of the town were confined to a quarter, joined by those from surrounding villages and expellees from the annexed region. Forced labor in the quarries and on the railway line was a daily reality. In the autumn, the town was emptied: its inhabitants were taken to the station and transported to Treblinka. Those who went into hiding were hunted down in the weeks that followed, and the region was declared free of Jews.
