Olkusz, a former mining town between Kraków and Silesia, had a community bound to the trade and crafts of lead and silver. Annexed to the Reich, the region endured an even harsher regime than the Generalgouvernement: Jews were subjected to forced labor within the first weeks, and a day of public abuse in the market square — preserved in local memory — marked the beginning of the occupation. The population was subsequently gathered and transported to the sorting center at Sosnowiec, from which convoys departed for Auschwitz. The community of Olkusz disappeared in the summer.
