The Jews of the town were gathered in the marketplace, some shot on the spot, the rest sent to Bełżec.
Tarnów, between Cracow and Rzeszów, was home to a Jewish community that made up nearly half of the city's population. It was from Tarnów that the first convoy of prisoners to Auschwitz had departed two years earlier.
The June action gathered the inhabitants in the market square, where the selection was made in plain sight: some were shot on the spot and in the surrounding streets, the rest were taken to the station and sent to Bełżec. A reduced quarter survived afterward, and was liquidated the following year.
