Maków Mazowiecki, a small town in northern Mazovia on the Orzyc, annexed to the Reich, had a Jewish community that made up nearly half of its inhabitants and lived by weaving and small trade. The occupying forces established a closed quarter there, into which families from surrounding villages were also brought. Hunger and typhus claimed many victims. In the autumn, the population was gathered, transported to a transit center in the region, then directed by rail convoys to the camp at Auschwitz. No one returned to reopen the synagogue.
