The two ghettos of the city are emptied within a few weeks; the inscriptions left by the victims in the synagogue have been preserved.
Kovel, a railway junction in Volhynia, had two enclosed districts, one for holders of work certificates, the other for the rest of the population. They were emptied one after the other during the summer.
The walls of the city's great synagogue, where inhabitants were locked up before their execution, bear the inscriptions they left there in pencil and with sharp implements: names, addresses, farewells, requests to notify relatives. Recorded after the war, they constitute one of the rare written testimonies left on the spot by victims.
