The first action removes the largest part of the ghetto; when the survivors learn, at the end of summer, that their turn has come, they set their own houses ablaze and make for the forest.
Korets, in Volhynia, was home to an ancient community and a renowned Hassidic court. In the spring, the ghetto was emptied and its inhabitants led to pits dug at the edge of the town. During the second operation, in the autumn, the last Jews set fire to the ghetto rather than surrender, and a group made its way into the forests to fight among the partisans.
