Liquidation of the ghetto of Jasło

Jasło, in western Galicia at the foot of the Carpathians, was home to a community of merchants and oil workers, as the region was one of the first in Europe to have exploited naphtha. The occupying forces established a closed quarter there into which Jews from neighboring towns were driven. In the summer, the inhabitants were led to the Bełżec death camp, following a selection carried out in the market square. The men retained for labor were put to work in refineries and on construction sites, then deported in their turn. The town of Jasło, subsequently devastated by the fighting on the front, lost its entire Jewish population within the space of a few months.
