Iłża, a former episcopal city in the Świętokrzyskie Mountains, was home to a community of potters and merchants whose presence stretched back several centuries. The occupation imposed forced labor in the quarries, then concentrated the Jewish population in a reduced quarter to which Jews from neighboring villages were added. In autumn, the inhabitants were led to the assembly point at Starachowice, from which convoys departed for Treblinka. The sick and those in hiding were shot on the spot. The Jewish cemetery of Iłża, one of the oldest in the region, was destroyed.
