Grajewo, a town in northern Podlachia near the former Prussian border, was home to a Jewish community that made up nearly half of its population and lived by border trade and craftsmanship. From the very first days of the German occupation, in the summer of the third year of the war, community leaders were murdered and the synagogue was burned down. The survivors were confined to an enclosed quarter, then transferred to the neighboring ghettos of the Białystok region. The following autumn, they were transported to the Treblinka death camp.
