Ciechanowiec, a small town in Podlachia on the Nurzec, was home to a Jewish community that made up the great majority of its inhabitants and lived by milling, weaving, and the weekly market. Falling under German occupation in the summer of the third year of the war, the community first suffered the execution of its notables, then confinement in an enclosed quarter to which families from neighboring villages were also brought. The following autumn, the occupier emptied this quarter and transported its inhabitants, through the regional assembly point, to the nearby extermination camp of Treblinka.
