Drohobycz, in Galicia, lived off oil and refining like its neighbor Boryslav. Its Jewish community, one of the most significant in the region, counted among its inhabitants the writer and artist Bruno Schulz, shot dead on a street of the city that year.
The major roundups of the summer directed the inhabitants of the closed quarter toward Bełżec, while other groups were shot in the Bronica forest, on the outskirts of the city. A labor camp attached to the refineries survived for a few more months.
