Chmielnik, between Kielce and Busko, was an almost entirely Jewish small town, renowned for its fairs and houses of study. Under the occupation, the enclosed quarter received, in addition to its inhabitants, Jews from the surrounding villages and those expelled from Łódź and Cracovie; the density there caused famine and typhus. In the autumn, the town was emptied in two operations: the inhabitants were led on foot to the station and then transported to Treblinka. The columns crossed the countryside for several leagues, and those who fell were killed by the roadside.
