Town in the wooded borderlands of Lubelskie, whose Jewish population is led in autumn to the death camp.
Ostrów Lubelski, a small town on the forested fringes of the district, was home to an ancient community whose life revolved around the weekly market. The occupying forces established a closed quarter there and pushed Jews from the surrounding hamlets into it. The inhabitants were employed in logging and marsh drainage. In the autumn, the town was emptied: its inhabitants were led to Lubartów and then to Sobibór. The proximity of the Parczew forests allowed entire families to flee before the operation and join the groups surviving there in shelters; others were caught during the manhunts conducted by the gendarmerie the following winter.
