Town of the salt mines of Little Poland whose ghetto, emptied a first time at the end of summer, is completed the following year.
Bochnia, a salt-mining town east of Cracow, harbored an ancient community whose presence dated back to the Middle Ages despite centuries of residence prohibitions. During the occupation, the Jews of the town and the district were gathered into an enclosed quarter, where conditions deteriorated rapidly. In the summer and then in the autumn, two operations emptied this quarter: the inhabitants were taken to the station and transported to Bełżec, while the sick and the children were killed on the spot, in the courtyard of the community house and at the cemetery. A labor camp was maintained for some time for men employed in the workshops; it was liquidated and its occupants transferred to Auschwitz.
