Liquidation of the ghetto of Zgierz

Zgierz, an industrial suburb north of Łódź, was home to an ancient Jewish community, bound up with the rise of weaving in the nineteenth century. Annexed to the Reich, the city was among the first in the region to be declared free of Jews: by the end of the first year of occupation, its inhabitants were driven from their homes and transferred to the ghetto of Łódź and to the neighboring towns of Głowno and Ozorków. Those who remained were put to work dismantling property. The synagogue was destroyed. The transferred population would perish in the liquidations of the years that followed.
