Turek, a small town in Greater Poland known for its weavers, annexed to the Reich, was home to a Jewish community established there since the nineteenth century. From the very first months of the occupation, the inhabitants endured requisitions, the destruction of the synagogue, and the imposition of forced labor. They were then gathered into an enclosed quarter and, over the course of autumn and winter, transported by convoy to the extermination center of Chełmno nad Nerem, one of the first established in occupied Poland and the closest to this region. The community vanished within a matter of weeks.
