The Jewish community remaining in the city after the occupation is exterminated by successive shootings.
Tchernihiv, in northern Ukraine, was taken in September following bombardments that destroyed much of the city. The Jewish community, ancient and numerous, had begun to disperse before the front arrived.
Those who remained were registered, required to wear the distinctive sign, then executed by successive shootings throughout the autumn, without any single action having been recorded. It is this fragmentation that explains why no definitive toll could be established for Tchernihiv.
